Interview May 2004

Q: Tell us how things are going with the website and the free music model.

J: Well, the free music model works, as far as bringing tremendous amounts of traffic to my website. I would say the amount of visitors has at least tripled since I’ve gone free. Also, more pages are looked at, because I have added more content over time. Also, the donation model shows me that there are appreciative people out there.

Q: People seem to want CD’s of the new album and others. I understand all of the albums will go on sale with bonus tracks this Fall?

J: The thing is this, not everyone has the capacity to download off the Internet, so some of my fans have been requesting that I at least make the sale of my CD’s an option… so I will be providing that. Both free, and for sale, depending on what a person prefers. Of course if someone purchases one (for a low price, naturally), they will be getting the artwork on the CD, and a list of the songs, and an autograph, etc. I figure if somebody is kind enough to buy the CD, I might as well sign it! As far as bonus tracks on the CD’s for sale, yes, I plan on adding some…just to make them special.

Q: Will there still be new songs of the month?

J: Of course…I will still put a new free song up every month…I really enjoy doing that, and it keeps me creating in the studio.

Q: There are now two websites… why is that?

J: People were downloading so many songs that I ran out of what is called “storage space,” at my website….it was actually becoming a problem! So the only way I could manage was to have someone set up another sister site. It is working out great….

Q: How successful has the free downloading been?

J: Well, I think I kind of just answered that… so successful I had to add a new website!

Q: I understand you’ve had top ten hits at Amazon.com?

J: I am very moved by that, because the competition is quite tremendous there. I have a number one hit in Brazilian Jazz, with four more in the top ten there, and a number one hit in Smooth Jazz, and others in the top twenty there, and number two at Christian music…with others in their top twenty there too. I am very flattered, because there are some artists on the charts that I consider very good.

Q: With the newsletter about to enter it’s 8th year, what kind of response have you gotten regarding the essays?

J: The essays connect me to a huge audience around the world…because even if someone isn’t interested in music per se, or can’t download, they can still read text… and now with my essays also in blog form at the new website, JenniferAvalon.net, it has opened the essays up to a whole new generation that loves blogs. A number of religious organizations thank me for the essays….that always makes me feel great.

Q: Can you share some thoughts you have on your music and essays?

J: How do you mean?

Q: For instance, where does the inspiration come from?

J: Ah, the mystery question (laughter) Where does all creativity come from… that is perhaps what you’re really asking, if you don’t mind me saying so. If you believe that a person can allow themselves to be open to the goodness of the Universe, then maybe I’ve answered your question….

Q: Well, that’s a mysterious answer to a mysterious question I guess!

J: It’s really very simple. Faith.

Q: I hear you. What can we look forward to from you this year?

J: After I complete the final song for “Peace in the Valley,” I am going to take a little break music-wise to prepare for the beginning of another new CD in the Fall. I will still write and send out the weekly essay, and the website will be continuously updated, but I need a little break to write some more songs for the next CD…I don’t even have a title for it yet. Also, I want to have a little time to get a suntan!!

Q: So there will be more new music in the Fall?

J: Absolutely….I am the happiest when I am writing and recording…..

Q: You had mentioned in our last interview something about doing videos at some point…

J: Oh yeah, that’s in the pipeline….the technology is moving towards what it is I am looking for.

Q: Please keep us posted as to when that will happen.

J: Sure.

Q: Thank you Ms Avalon…always a pleasure to talk with you.

J: The pleasure is mine. Thank you for being interested.

Haven’t written in my journal for a week, due to being “under the weather”…feeling much better now. I learned from this week that it is much more important to take care of the INSIDE of oneself, than the OUTSIDE….meaning, get enough rest, eat properly, take vitamins, examine emotions, etc.

Wishes

Each week, many of us have floating through our minds a pocketful of wishes that we hope, somewhere out there, someone will grant. Alas, with each wish comes a collection of responsibilities. Each step up the ladder brings its own set of circumstances.

The granting of a wish can be a wonderful thing….a vehicle to spring us forward and elevate our lives to a place where we believe life can be more fulfilling. If all we do is look at the joy and exhilaration of the wish being granted, and fail to see the changes that come with it, a wish can easily turn into a burden.

Recently I saw a report on television where a person who won the state’s lottery mentioned how much their lives changed because of a sequence of numbers on a one dollar ticket. The man said that he planned to tell no one that he won, and he thought for sure that things would remain essentially the same…unfortunately, it was not to be the case. You see, he always wanted a Mercedes Benz…it was his dream car. So he went down to his local dealership and within days a brand new shining model was parked in the driveway. His wife wanted to completely renovate the kitchen and bathroom…so within hours an interior designer and crew were parked outside their house. All this commotion was not going down too well with the people on the block of their very modest neighborhood. Human beings can be a funny crew indeed…if they don’t know the reason for why something is changing, they can quickly come up with a reason of their own! So, the man who won the lottery and decided to mention it to no one, was now rumored to be a citizen dealing in narcotics! When he got word that these rumors were circulating the neighborhood, he tried to put a stop to it, and owned up and said hey, I won the lottery. What he heard back was mind blowing….nobody believed him! What finally happened was within three months, his house was put up for sale and he and his family left. His words to the reporter were, I didn’t change, everyone else did. Could he have handled it better? Perhaps…but wishes can take on a life of their own if one isn’t careful.

For me personally if a genie showed up at my door, and said, “Jennifer, I will grant you three wishes,” I would have to respond, “tell you what genie, can you give me 24 hours to think about it? So that I could get a chance to really think about what I need and the effects it would have on my life?” If the genie replied, “Nope Jennifer, it’s now or never,” from my experiences in life, I would have to say, “Thanks, but no thanks.” Each wish would change my life…I would want to make sure that the wishes were wise.

A wise person once said, “Be careful what you wish for, because it may just come true.” Dreaming and wishing are wonderful things, but they will mean nothing if they come true without appreciation. When we are presented with an opportunity, it’s important to be thankful and humble. Wishes should be opportunities that not only give to us, but also enable us to grant someone else their wishes.

The leaves are beginning to grow on the trees, and the daffodils are smiling in the yard….I absolutely love Spring!!

The human experience is the most painful of all…having a human body. Can you imagine what it must be like to shed the body, like taking off a cloak, and one day being part of God and the Universe again?

Other Voices

Our vocal cords create a language that we use to communicate with each other. That language expresses our thoughts, opinions and hopes to others whom we encounter. Each voice is unique…and deserves respect, even when we disagree. What sometimes escapes us is that we also have other voices.

Take a look at the palms of your hands…do we ever stop to realize how loud the voice is that is created by those hands? All around us are voices that have been created by human hands…each image and sound speak out across the airwaves. Carpentry, sculpting, cooking, painting, etc.etc. they are the easy examples…but what about the hands of a surgeon or rescue worker? those too speak out. Our feet..where they take us, what they do, are voices too. The human body is just one large transmitter.

We transmit and we receive…a planet of voices constantly interacting. To just transmit is Ego….to just receive is Abuse. We have to learn to do both. Like breathing, we take in air, we exhale. It is not a mistake to do both. A true voice learns to speak and listen. A healthy voice grows stronger…through knowledge. A dim voice grows weak through fear. The further our voices travel, the more we can receive. Human beings, each one, made up of a collection of voices that express the soul.

When we succeed, we give thanks. When we fail, we ask to be forgiven. Our voices sing the same song….just with different versions. Collectively, we are the Choir of Mankind. One day we may all create a sound that will leave us speechless….a planet in harmony, an orchestra of peace.

Play on……

Sometimes I just want to sit back, put up my feet, and watch a good DVD….tonight it’s going to be “Master and Commander”…Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum (ha!)

With all the sadness in the world, it’s very important to remember to experience Joy. Without it, we can’t give back and change the world….it is Joy that changes the world, for the better:)

With so many diverse opinions in the world, with regard to almost everything, I think that if we could try to get a “birds-eye” view once in a while, literally envision ourselves above our planet looking down, then maybe we could see ourselves as part of one big whole…that we are all in this thing together, whether we like it or not. It is not about “May the best man win.” If any of us loses, we all lose.

Been working on a new recording, and took a break to do some more basement clearing, from my past move. It is scary how much “stuff” one can accumulate!!!
